| ∙∙ Attendance Policy ∙∙ |
The school administration and teachers cannot successfully fulfill their responsibility
to the student unless the student is present for all regularly scheduled classroom activities.
It is essential that every student understand and accept the necessity to attend school
every day school is in session. Regular attendance shall be required of all children
between the ages of six and sixteen to insure the continuity of the educational process.
Acceptable Reasons for Absence:
∙ School sponsored educational activities or externally sponsored activities
sanctioned by the principal.
∙ Suspension from school.
∙ Other special reasons: has a medical appointment, family emergencies, full day
court appearance.
∙ Illness, supported by written statement from parent or physician.
∙ Serious illness or death in the immediate family.
∙ Religious holiday as prescribed by the New Jersey State Department of
Education.
Absence from school on a religious holiday designated by the Board of Education shall be
considered a legal, excused absence, provided notice has been given by the parent or
guardian at least one day in advance. No child absent because of a religious holiday may
be deprived of any award of eligibility or opportunity to compete for an award. A student
who misses a test or an examination because of a religious holiday must be given the right
to make up this test or examination.
Unacceptable Reasons for Absence:
∙ Truancy ∙ Cutting ∙ Tardiness
Upon returning to school, the student must submit a note from the parent indicating
dates of absence and reason. A physician’s note may be required at the request of the
administration.
Middle School: Perfect attendance is a goal every student should set for himself or herself.
Excessive absence is not to be tolerated. In an effort to maintain communication between
the school and home, parents will be notified after:
5 Absences - letter to parent/student conference with guidance counselor.
10 Absences - letter to parent/parent conference with guidance counselor.
15 Absences - letter to parent/parent conference with Principal.
20 Absences - student grade can be reduced two (2) letter grades.
Parents are encouraged to monitor their child’s attendance patterns and work with the
school for the child’s benefit.
High School: A student with excessive absence is in danger of losing credit for a course. A
written notification will be sent to the parent/guardian relative to a student’s excessive
absence from school and loss of credit. A Conference will be required. If attendance does
not improve from this effort, such a case shall be brought by the Superintendent to the
Board of Education with a recommendation for exclusion from school or such action as
deemed appropriate.
Appeals: It is recognized that unforseen factors may cause excessive absence. After the
receipt of notification of no credit status, a parent/guardian can petition the school
principal within five (5) days of receipt of the letter. A school attendance appeals
committee will be established to review the case. A decision may be appealed to the
Superintendent of Schools and the Board of Education within the established guidelines.
