Summer Reading Program
Dear Parents/Guardians:
As the school year comes to a close, we would like to remind all parents/guardians that the Summer Reading Program will be in effect again this summer. The purpose of this is to inspire the students to become life long readers and to reinforce the skills that they have learned throughout the school year. While success in life depends on many factors, we know that successful reading skills are very important to your child's future.
Reading is, among other factors, a skill and like all skills, the more you use it, the better you become at it. With this idea in mind, we begin our:
SUMMER READING PROGRAM

We are therefore asking that all students participate in this program and with the appropriate grade level packet, follow the specific directions for your child for his/her next grade level in September. All assignments must be submitted to your child's homeroom teacher upon their return to school in September.
We sincerely hope that you will encourage your child to read all summer long. Please remember that the town library may have the choices for your child's summer reading books and that this is not a chore but a fun activity that both you and your child should enjoy. It is the goal of Huber Street School to ensure that your child attain reading success and achieve his/her potential as they embrace Reading throughout their education.
Thank you for your cooperation in the Summer Reading Program and for your continued support throughout your child's elementary experience.

SUMMER READING
Kindergarten Entering Grade 1 in September
Read a book about an animal. The book can be about a fictional animal character or about a real animal. Then draw your favorite part of the book and write two or three sentences about it. Please also keep a reading log of all the books you have read or have had read to you by an adult. The reading log is included here. You can add more pages to the log as needed. Bring these assignments to your new teacher on the first day of school in September.
Dear Parents/Guardians of incoming 2nd grade students,
Reading is fundamental to the education and growth of all children. Therefore it is crucial that ALL students read over summer vacation. Reading should be a welcomed daily event in every child's life!
In lieu of summer book reports, we have compiled an assigned and suggested summer reading list. The assigned reading list includes 6 books, 4 of which your child must read. There is also a suggested reading list provided to encourage reading to continue throughout the summer. In the packet you will also find a reading log for you & your child to fill out over the course of the summer. We have suggested a variety of books that will benefit each individual students reading level.
We are looking forward to working with your child next year. In September every child's reading log will be carefully looked over in order to see what has been read during the summer. In class, each child will also be asked to write journal entries and complete comprehension assignments that relate to the 4 assigned books he/she choose to read. These books will also be discussed and analyzed; so it is very important that you encourage your child to read and complete his/her reading log.
Please see the attached reading lists, both suggested and assigned, as well as the reading log. Thank you for your continued support and partnership in your child's life-long educational journey.
