HEALTHY SNACKS/BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS POLICY
Dear Parent/Guardian
We would like to take this opportunity to share some important information regarding Secaucus School District’s student nutrition policy.
In September 2006, the Secaucus School District was required to comply with N.J.S.A., 18A:33-4. This law stipulates that school lunches meet the minimum nutritional standards that are established by the Department of Education. N.J.A.C. 2:36-1.7 further regulates the types of food items offered outside the Federal meal requirements, such as those foods that are sold a la carte, through vending machines, school stores and fundraisers.
As part of Huber Street School’s ongoing effort to comply with these regulations, students will no longer be permitted to bring any food to school that is not in compliance with the above-referenced statutes. Unfortunately, this includes many "class party" favorites, including; baked goods (i.e. cupcakes and cakes), candy and soft drinks. The following items shall not be served, sold or given away as a free promotion anywhere on school property at any time before the end of the school day: (1) Foods of minimal nutritional value (see attached), (2) all food and beverage items listing sugar (ex. corn syrup, fructose, honey, sucrose, etc.) , in any form, as the first ingredient, (3) all forms of candy as defined by the New Jersey Department of Agriculture. Beverages shall be limited to milk, water or 100 percent fruit or vegetable juices. You may obtain a copy of these nutritional standards through the New Jersey Department of Agriculture, Division of Food and Nutrition, P.O. Box 334, Trenton, N. J. 08625-0334.
If you choose to celebrate your child’s birthday in school, we have attached a healthy snack suggestion list. We at Huber Street School encourage birthday celebrations to include books, games, free-time, etc. If your child desires to bring something in to share, we encourage a novelty pencil, a small (non-food) grab-bag party favor or something they can all enjoy. The policy is aimed at two important areas. First of all, we do NOT want to send children the message that food is a reward. Second of all, regardless of whether or not your child has a classmate with a food allergy or dietary restriction in their class THIS YEAR, someday they will. Always consider allergies, ethnic and medical food restrictions. Let’s try to not make food the main focus of the celebration.
We apologize for any inconvenience that this new policy may cause. As always, please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns regarding this law.
Thank you for your cooperation.

SAFETY GUIDELINES
In order to provide your children with a safe and secure educational environment, Huber Street School will be implementing the following procedures.
Doors to the building will remain closed until the first bell rings at 8:15 A.M. At that time, students will line up in their assigned areas and teachers will escort them to their classrooms. Once the children enter the building, parents/guardians/family members will be expected to leave the school grounds. No one should follow their child to class. In the event of inclement weather, students will be permitted to enter the gym. Parents may enter the gym with their children, but will be expected to leave when the children are escorted to class.
Our school day will begin promptly at 8:25 A.M. Students who arrive late to school must enter through the main entrance and complete a "late form" in the central office.
Parents who would like to meet with a teacher must call or stop in the office to make an appointment.
Parents participating in a school activity such as a classroom volunteer or any other school related function, must report to the office, to sign in and obtain a "Visitor’s Pass". The "Visitor’s Pass" must be worn at all times while in the building.
Parents bringing lunch for their children must drop them off in the designated lunch boxes in the hallway outside the main office. Parents bringing books, homework, etc., must go directly to the main office. Parents will not be permitted to go to their child’s classroom.
In the past two years, Huber Street School has experienced a dramatic increase in enrollment. The above mentioned guidelines will help provide your children with a safe and uninterrupted educational experience.
Your understanding and cooperation is truly appreciated.
