Good Afternoon Secaucus Families,

I hope everyone is doing well. I am providing you with the latest FAQ based on the “Parent Communication Form” questions that have been asked over the last two weeks.

I thank all parents who participated in the re-registration process this past month. We offered 6 different afternoon/evening sessions for parents to re register their children at every school in the district. The average time each parent took to re register was approximately 8 minutes; shorter for those who uploaded the required documents to the portal already. For those who did NOT take advantage of these afternoon sessions, you will be required to make an appointment with your child’s school to complete this process. In mid- to late-October, we will begin disenrollment and you will be notified that your child/children will be removed from our rosters. Please avoid this by contacting your child’s main office to get this process completed.

The Parent Communication Form is still open for questions and can be accessed here: https://forms.gle/wFy9mQYpd1HdzRuk7. There is also an easy-to-use button on the www.sboe.org home page that you can click that will lead you straight to the form. We welcome all questions! Please enjoy our bi-weekly FAQ below.

Take Care and Enjoy the Weekend,

Dr. Daniela Riser

Acting Superintendent

Frequently Asked Questions - 10/07/2022

____________________________________________________________

Our Parent Communication Form is still open! If there are any questions you would like to ask the district administration, please visit this link to ask: https://forms.gle/Xcx1QzgPN52JFH6DA

Q: My son does not attend any of the Secaucus in-districts schools. He has an out-of-district placement. Do I still need to re register?

A: Yes, you do. Please contact Ms. Donna Waiver in order to complete this process at 201-974-2000 x2460 or [email protected]

Q: When is the Clarendon library going to be available for students?

A: The district has moved to more teacher libraries of texts and e-readers through Raz kids. However, once minor construction has been completed at Clarendon school (after many delays in supply/equipment deliveries), we will reopen the library with our Media Specialist, Ms. Melendez.

Q: Why do 4th graders not have enough time to eat their lunch?

A: The way the lunches are structured, all grades have at least 25 minutes to eat their lunches. Commonly, students get to their tables and chat with other students. If not prompted, they will run out of time to eat lunch and go straight to recess. We are now keeping students who do not finish lunch in the lunchroom until their meals are completed, then they are able to join their friends in recess. We are also looking into streamlining the paid lunch lines to accelerate the time it takes to receive a school lunch. However, in its current state, it takes less than 5 minutes to get a paid school lunch at Clarendon school.

Q: What is the curriculum for health education for 4th graders. What elements of any of CRT are included for 4th graders.

A: All curriculum files are located on the www.sboe.org website for perusal. To get to the K-5 Comprehensive Health and Physical Education Curriculum, go to: Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment » Secaucus Elementary Curriculum » Comprehensive Health and Physical Education - Grades K-5. or click here: https://4.files.edl.io/c59d/08/23/22/144328-a0dcf9ef-30a4-4c6f-a325-ec8a4b3e61cf.pdf

Q: What mechanisms are used for the academic and emotional adaptation of children who do not speak English? There are talks or workshops about children who come from other countries and do not speak the language, as well as tolerance and help.

A: All of our ESL instructors in the school district attend workshops and symposiums throughout the school year that cover the topics you are referring to. In addition, some of our instructors also meet with the grade-level instructors to share tips and tricks for maximizing instruction for our English Language Learners. We will continue to offer extra professional development in this area, as we see our ELL population growing each year.

Q: Is there a makeup date for re-registration ?

A: We have completed six afternoon/evening re-registration sessions. Please contact your child’s school in order to complete the process and prevent them from being disenrolled.

Q: We have registered my kid for Kindergarten in March 2022. Do we need to do re-registration? This is the first time he is attending Secaucus School District.

A: No. You do not need to re register if:

  • You registered a NEW PreK or Kindergarten Student after February 2022
  • You registered a NEW student in all other grades after June 20, 2022

Q: What content restrictions are placed on the school-issued chrome books? I ask because I noticed my 3rd grader playing what looked like a fun game found on a website, but then noticed that the suggestive language content of the game was completely inappropriate for an 8 year old.

A: We have blocked and screened many different websites and chromebooks apps that the students use. If something gets past our filter, please report the website/app to: https://sboe.incidentiq.com/guest/NAM8KTKC/sboe-remote-form#top

Although we have blocked many sites inappropriate for young students, new websites and apps are developed every day that may surpass our filters. Reporting these sites/apps will ensure that no other students have access to them going forward.

Q: The lunch menu on Maschio's site is not accurate every day. When will it be updated?

A: Maschio's has updated all of their menus in each school quite recently. However, these menus are subject to change based on item availability (small changes need to be made). Although this issue is slowly resolving, supply chain issues still do exist and we are working tirelessly to ensure that accurate items are on our menus each day.
